Do hired wireless microphones need an Ofcom licence?

Sometimes. UK wireless-microphone licensing depends on the operating frequency and the equipment’s technical conditions, not on whether the microphone is hired or owned. Ask the supplier to confirm the lawful arrangement for the actual systems, venue and dates before use. Do not assume all radio microphones are licence-free.

Identify the equipment before checking the licence

A model family may be sold in several tuning ranges. Record the exact model and frequency-band information from the equipment, and include any systems the venue already uses. A brand name or a photograph of the microphone alone may not identify its operating range.

Licence exemption is conditional. A system must meet the applicable technical requirements in the relevant band; a frequency being mentioned on a website does not mean every device can use it legally.

Use current Ofcom information

Ofcom introduced additional wireless-microphone exemptions on 29 April 2026. Older articles and even older guidance pages can describe the previous position, so check the latest licensing updates alongside the applicable interface requirements. This article was checked against the published position on 2 October 2026; confirm it again for your booking.

Some use remains licensed. Where hired equipment is used under a supplier’s UK Wireless Microphone Licence, Ofcom describes a written-permit arrangement. Ask whether that applies to your hire and obtain the appropriate confirmation. Do not assume 10 out of 10 or another supplier has included it without agreement.

Licensing and coordination are different checks

A lawful frequency arrangement does not by itself guarantee interference-free operation. Several radio systems may need to be coordinated with one another and with the venue’s existing equipment. Supply the complete list, including other departments’ radio microphones, rather than treating each hire order separately.

For a production using many channels, involve the responsible technical team early. Do not change frequencies at random during the event or rely on an old channel list from another venue. Keep the agreed configuration and licensing information with the event records.

Put it into practice

Ask the hire supplier to confirm

  • Exact equipment models and tuning ranges.
  • Licence or exemption conditions for the intended use.
  • Any written permission needed and who provides it.
  • Frequency coordination with the venue and other equipment.
